Zhong Wen
This is my vote for "Best Online Chinese Dictionary". Zhong Wen uses
a lot of java, and the entries are stored as images rather than using
character codes (thus making the site a bit slow). The site contains
thousands of characters (traditional and modern forms for most) and
includes, for each character : a
fairly detailed background on each character, a link to an animation
of the drawing of the character, a hierarchical list of related
characters, a list of words which contain the character, and links to
other dictionaries' entries on the character. The site itself is
purely Mandarin (pinyin) but some of the links are to Cantonese
entries. Also the site has translations of Chinese classical
literature (in English and Chinese), a pinyin chat room, and many
links to interesting sites.
Dictionary of
Chinese Characters (CCDICT)
This dictionary, while not being as detailed or as organised as Zhong
Wen, is a fantastic site for looking up Chinese words. Where Zhong
Wen can only look up words via typing in English or Pinyin, CCDICT can
look up words via Mandarin (Hanyu) Pinyin, Cantonese
(Jyutpin, Yale, and Sidney Lau), and Hakka (Hakka, Pinyim, Pinyin,
MacIver), the Four Corner method, Sino-Korean Yale,
Sino-Japanese, and English. As well, you can view the results in even
more orthographies, and, for Hakka, you may change the Romanization
to the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). The results come back
with an image of the character, the various orthographies chosen
above, and various English translations. Also, all material on
CCDICT is licensed
under the OpenContent Public
License (OPL), and its downloadable source code is licensed
under the Open Source General Public License, which is very
commendable.
Chinese-English
Dictionary (CEDICT).
This site allows you to search via Pinyin or English but ALSO via
Chinese character codes (either GB, Big5, or Unicode). Results come
back with the character, Pinyin, and English.
